Bio

Edwin A. Burnette is the Vice President of Defender Legal Services at the National Legal Aid & Defender Association.  Previously, he provided counsel in strategic leadership addressing precepts of leadership as it relates to the areas of office management and organization, planning and operations, as well as policy development and implementation.  He advises on the impact communication has in these areas.  He is a long time trainer with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association and the National Defender Leadership Institute and is currently working with the American Bar Association and American University in Washington, DC.  Mr. Burnette completed his term as Chief Executive and Chief Attorney of the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender in March of 2009.  He served as Public Defender for six years, where his responsibilities included etablishing policies and procedures for representing clients and designating liaisons to all county agencies involved in the administration and funding of the Law Office.  Prior to his appointment, while serving as First Assistant Public Defender, Mr. Burnette was responsible for the management and day-to-day operations of the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defender, labor negotiations, budget preparation, recruitment and policy.  He served as an Assistant Public Defender from June 1987, assigned to the Appeals Division and Felony Trial Division in the First and Sixth Municipal Districts.  From March 1991 up to his appointment as First Assistant, he was a supervising attorney for the First Municipal Division.  Mr. Burnette served 15 years with the United States Marine Corps.  While stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Quantico, Virginia, Washington, DC and Okinawa, Japan, his military positions included operational law specialist, senior defense counsel, company commander, head legal assistance attorney, chief prosecution attorney, trial defense counsel for the Office of the State Judge Advocate, and appellate defense counsel for the Department of the Navy.  Mr. Burnette is a member of the: Illinois State Bar Association; John Howard Association, Board of Directors; Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; National Legal Aid and Defender Association, Board of Directors; Chicago Bar Association; and the Cook County Bar Association.  He also sits on the Office of the State Public Defender, Board of Commissioners, and the 1st Judicial District Character and Fitness Committee for the Illinois Board for Admission to the Bar.  He is the Past-President and past member of the School Board for Rich Township High School District #227.  1977, J.D., DePaul University of Law; 1972, B.S., U.S. Naval Academy.
