Bio

Fern Laethem graduated from University of the Pacific's , McGeorge School of Law in 1976. She began her legal career as a Deputy District Attorney in Sacramento, California and was later appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California. In 1981 she opened a solo criminal defense practice which she maintained until 1989 when California Governor George Deukmejian appointed her as the State Public Defender of California. She was reappointed by Governor Pete Wilson for two more terms. Fern retired as State Public Defender in 1999 and accepted a position with Sacramento County as the Executive Director of Sacramento County Conflict Criminal Defenders. Fern is the Vice Chair of the American Council of Chief Defenders, serves on NLADA’s Defender Policy Group, has been on the faculty of NLADA’s National Defender Leadership Institute for many years and serves as a consultant on various NLADA research projects.
